Renewing the Promise of Catholic Education

Since 1855, schools within the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board have given witness to the truth that Jesus Christ is the foundation and the heart of Catholic Education and the centre of its community. This conviction is realized in our mission which in union with our Bishop is to enable all learners to realize the fullness of humanity of which our Lord Jesus Christ is the model. In support of this Christ-centred mission, the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board has recently begun the process to develop a multi-year strategic plan for the period 2019-2022. Strategic planning is a process used to assist the Board of Trustees in making decisions that will guide and shape its work. The goals of the Board Improvement Plan for Student Achievement are foundational to a strategic plan. The strategic plan will also help to identify the operational, financial, capital and other goals necessary to enable the realization of our mission. The process used to inform and shape the 2019-2022 plan will include wide-ranging consultation with all of the partners within our Catholic School and Parish communities.

As in the past, the Board’s 2019/2020 Budget Process will be built upon the following pillars/principles. These important principles include:

The intent and purpose of the survey is to assist the Board with the preparation and development of its 2019/2020 budget. The results will serve to either reinforce continued financial funding in a specific area or identify other areas where the Board could support, if financially possible, or redirect funds. In a period of constrained funding where difficult choices have to be made, consideration of the results of the survey become even more important.

In its 2019/2020 Education Funding Guide, the Ministry of Education has informed School Boards of the government’s “objective of efficiency gains in order of four cents on the dollar to be found in the government’s expenditures”. Reductions of this magnitude would have a significant impact on our revenue and necessitate difficult decision making and shared commitment to those programs/services which most clearly distinguish publicly funded Catholic Education.

Within this context, the Board remains committed to our Catholic School System’s long and rich tradition of promoting academic and co-curricular excellence within a Christ-centred learning environment and our history of good financial stewardship.

In an effort to share this information and consult more widely, the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board is seeking your input in the development of its 2019/2020 budget.
