Volunteer Opportunities at OLMC

Volunteer Opportunities at OLMC

Please find below a list of committee and other volunteer opportunities at OLMC:

Fundraising Committee
Our goal as a fundraising committee is to plan and coordinate events that will generate funds that will support our school and their initiatives. Volunteers are required to organize and implement fundraising events. The time commitment can be as much or as little as desired. (i.e. could be for the entire year or just one event). If you are interested in becoming a part of our fundraising committee or helping out at events, please contact Nancy Krell at nancykrell@cogeco.ca. Please watch for email updates about our activities and events.

Greening Committee
We on the Greening Committee have had an opportunity to look around the school property. We have addressed some projects that will assist in brightening up the appearance at the entrance of the school, as well as the general areas around the school. Our plan is to work on changing out the plants around the school and re-establishing the flower beds. The Greening Committee will also work to secure families to assist where possible with the labour undertaken to complete as many projects as possible. If you are interested in becoming a part of our greening committee or helping out, please contact John Lezon at olmc@hwcdsb.ca. Please watch for email updates about our activities and events.

Hospitality Committee
The definition of Hospitality is “generous and friendly treatment of visitors and guests", and this is the main focus of the CSC Hospitality Committee. The goal of the CSC Hospitality Committee is to make the children, parents and the OLMC community always feel welcome and a part of our amazing OLMC School. The committee endeavours to be very helpful and supportive in any way possible, including keeping the lines of communication open, clear and helpful. Having a group of positive, friendly individuals on this committee is what will make it a great new addition to the Catholic School Council. If you are interested in becoming a part of our hospitality committee or helping out at events, please contact Jackie Jobb at jackiejobb@hotmail.com. Please watch for email updates about our activities and events.

Lunch/Milk Committee
The Hot Lunch/Milk Committee is always open for new members and/or volunteers to help out with the Lunch Program. The Lunch Program is our school's major fundraiser, bringing in approximately $10,000 per year. There is also a group of about 12-15 volunteers who we schedule to come in the school on Mondays and Fridays to sort the milk and deliver the lunches to the classes. The Lunch Program is not a big time commitment if you are interested in delivering lunches to the classes; it takes about an hour Monday and/or Friday starting at 12:20. You can come in as much or a little as you like. This program would not be a success without the help of our generous volunteers! If you are interested in becoming a part of our lunch/milk committee, please contact Heather Quesnel at hquesnel@gmail.com.

Spirituality Committee
The Spirituality Committee strives to invite and create opportunities for the OLMC community to put our Catholic faith into action. Underpinning our motivations is the Scripture passage found in Matthew 25 where Jesus implores us to clothe the naked, feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, care for the sick, visit prisoners, and welcome strangers, saying: "Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." Historically, this committee has spearheaded the annual coat drive, supported the advent craft night, directed the Christmas pageant (advocating for the overall vision as well as the collection of canned goods on pageant night), assisted with the Shrove Tuesday pancake breakfast and First Communion breakfast, participated in the Grade 8 day of service at the Good Shepherd, organized various Catholic Education Week events, and procured the resource materials for the Parent Resource Library. We look forward to another year of living our faith outwardly as we recall the words of the prophet Micah: "And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly you’re your God”. If you are interested in becoming a part of our Spirituality committee, please contact Mary Giammichele at mgiammichele@gmail.com. Please watch for email updates about our activities and events.

Staff Appreciation Luncheon Committee
Volunteers are required to prepare a favourite hot/cold dish for the annual staff luncheon in the Spring. Time commitment is once per year. If you are interested in becoming a part of our staff appreciation luncheon committee, please contact Naomi MacDonald at naomi_z63@hotmail.com.

Uniform Committee
The uniform committee provides an opportunity for parents to provide feedback about the selection of the school uniform vendor and the pieces available within the school uniform. If you are interested in becoming a part of our uniform committee, please contact Mrs. Beaudoin at olmc@hwcdsb.ca.

Classroom Volunteers
Volunteers are required for various classrooms. It is recommended that a parent does not volunteer in their own child's classroom. Time commitment is flexible. Please contact Ms. Wintar at olmc@hwcdsb.ca for more information.

Book Fair
Volunteers are required for supervision during the annual Scholastic Book Fair. The time commitment is optional but will only be required 1 week per year. Please contact Mrs. Byrne at olmc@hwcdsb.ca for more details.

Everyone is welcome to attend meetings. Meetings are an opportunity to bring parents together to help foster a strong connection between school, church and families of OLMC.

Meetings follow an agenda and are chaired by the Chairperson of the CSC. Individual issues are not brought to the meeting, but concerns/questions that pertain to the school and school body are always welcome to be added ahead of time to the agenda.

Parents are welcomed to get involved with many activities in the school, through volunteering their time in leading, helping out and attending the various functions. From time to time the Catholic School Council will ask for volunteers for these functions through notices.

Supported by Fundraising Activities

Through your generous support of many fundraising activities, the CSC endeavours to enrich the school environment for all students.

For the 2011/2012 academic year, the CSC decided to support the Arts. Below is a breakdown of purchases and committed funds.

We would like to acknowledge the generous support received from the Optimist Club of Carlisle. The Optimist club will be building a pavilion in our playground to be used as an "outdoor classroom".

For the 2012/2013 academic year, the CSC decided to support Science.

The CSC has approved the purchase of science equipment in the amount of $3500. This equipment should arrive in April and will be available for all teachers to use in their classrooms.

St. Mary's DREAMS Project

The CSC is pleased to support the St. Mary’s DREAMS project by sponsoring 6 OLMC alumni who will be participating in upcoming trips. A donation of $100 was presented to each of the following alumni: Brooke Davey, Sarah Goulet, Ceighleighn MacInnis, Joey Duffy, Chris Jacques, and Daniel Rocchi.
